Preventive Sealants

Sealants
Sealants are a terrific cost effective way to prevent decay in children and are usually fully covered by insurance.
Back teeth have grooves. These are not just lines but actual grooves with depth that are particularly prone to decay. If you look at these areas after you child eats an oreo cookie, you will understand the reason for the high decay rate in grooves and why sealing these grooves is so effective.
Sealants are effective for everyone, however,
- Teeth must be sealed before decay occurs.
- Decay rates are are highest during the preteen & teen years.
- On average homecare is poorest during these years.
- Up to age 15, most insurances cover initial placements in full as well as replacements every three yearsl.
Disadvantages
- Can be pulled off by very sticky candy (some kids are just not candidates)
- Will wear slowly and need normal replacement every few years
